Throwing an 80s party? You need the right food to make your guests feel nostalgic. The 1980s were all about convenience and creative styling. While there are tons of recipes out there, I have 17+ fun and creative ideas to help you serve the perfect food for 80s party themes.
19+ Fun and Creative 80s Party Food Ideas
1. 7-Layer Casserole
Casseroles were all the rage in the 1980s and still are today. This recipe from Hunt’s is a classic, and it’s one that your guests will all appreciate.
You don’t necessarily need to use Hunt’s tomato sauce. Feel free to use whatever you have on hand or prefer.
You’ll start with a layer of uncooked rice in your casserole dish, and then you’ll add:
- Whole kernel corn (canned works best)
- One can of tomato sauce with 1/2 can of water
- 1/2 cup each of finely chopped green pepper and onion
- 3/4-lb. uncooked ground beef
- Another can of tomato sauce with 1/4 can of water
- Top with 4 strips of bacon, cut in half
Cover and bake for 1 hour. Then, uncover and bake for another 30 minutes.
2. Frankfurter Cheese Soup
Creamy, cheesy and beefy. This recipe embodies 80s food, and your guests will appreciate the unique presentation and combination of flavors.
Onion and celery make the base. Then, you’ll add butter and flour to make a thick sauce, along with bouillon cubes dissolved in hot water.
Other ingredients like milk, shredded American cheese, mixed veggies, pimiento and frankfurters create an interesting combination of flavors.

3. TV Dinners
You can’t have food for 80s party themes without TV dinners. You don’t have to spend a fortune on buying modern TV dinners. You can make your own, and serve them in portioned trays.
Fill them with classic TV dinner foods like:
- Pot roast
- Salisbury steak
- Mashed potatoes
- Creamed corn
- Dinner rolls
- Steamed baby carrots
- Brownie bites
- Jello squares
Take a look at old TV dinners to get inspiration for your spread.
4. Deviled Eggs
If there’s one thing we know for sure, deviled eggs always made an appearance at parties in the 1980s.
They 100% need to be a part of your party, too. They’re so easy to make.
Don’t get too creative with the flavors or toppings. Keep it simple, like they did in the 80s.
5. Summer Berry Jello Dessert Lasagna
Simple, delicious and ultra-processed. That’s the epitome of what 80s recipes were like. To make this, you only need a few ingredients:
- Golden Oreo crust
- Blueberry cheesecake layer
- Strawberries
- Strawberry Jello mix
- Cool Whip
- Sprinkles
6. Burgers, Hot Dogs and Fries
Step back into the 80s, when burgers, fries, hot dogs and Coca-Cola were staples at parties. If you’re having a summer party, you can grill your meat.
Serve your food on a table covered with a red checkered tablecloth and on retro serving platters.
You can even add other 80s favorites, like brownies, sundaes and donuts.
7. 80s Candy Bar
Serve your guests something sweet. Set up a retro candy bar with classics from the 80s, like:
- Nerds
- Bon bons
- Ring pops
- Wax bottle candy drinks
- Candy necklaces
- Candy buttons
- Bazooka gum
Serve them in pretty bowls with labels, and give everyone their own little bags to keep their candy in.
8. Gelatin Desserts
When I think of food for 80s party, gelatin is the first thing that comes to mind. Every dessert and even some main courses seemed to be made with gelatin.
You can find tons of recipes and get inspiration from vintage Jell-O collection cookbooks or even on Facebook groups.

9. Corn Dogs
Corn dogs were a massive staple in the 80s, and they make the perfect party food. Most clubs like Sam’s Club and Costco sell them in bulk. You can either do the full-size corn dogs or the bite-sized options – it’s up to you.
Serve them in pairs like the Pin in a hot dog tray topped with a squeeze of ketchup on one and yellow mustard on the other.
Use an air fryer or conventional oven to heat up your dogs. If you’re really feeling creative, you can prepare your corn dogs from scratch.

10. Ambrosia Salad
If you walked into any BBQ or party in the 80s, you would find at least one bowl of ambrosia salad. It was an iconic dish served at parties and gatherings of all types, but especially during the summer.
The best part is that it’s a super simple dish to make. You’ll mix together:
- Whipped topping (like Cool Whip)
- Shredded coconut
- Chopped walnuts
- Pineapple chunks
- Mandarin oranges
- Marshmallows
- Maraschino cherries
- Fruit cocktail
- Nutmeg and cinnamon
Combine all of the ingredients together in a big glass bowl and chill for 30-40 minutes before serving.
11. Homemade Mac and Cheese
One of my favorite food for 80s party ideas. Boxed macaroni and cheese was a staple in the 80s, but homemade variations were often served at parties (just like today).
It’s the ultimate 80s comfort food, and it’s not as complicated as you think to make.
The cheese sauce is just a mix of milk, butter, flour and cheese. You’ll mix the sauce with the elbow macaroni and bake with breadcrumbs on top for about 25-30 minutes.
Your guests will devour every last bite. I recommend making a bigger batch of cheese sauce just to make sure your dish isn’t too dry.
12. Georgia Peach Shortcake
A shortcake recipe that tastes just like summer. Desserts in the 80s always had this style of frosting and presentation.
But the flavors here are delicious and unexpected. Peaches are typically paired with vanilla cake, but this recipe creates a chocolate cake base.
The great thing about this dessert is that it’s not too complicated. You need all the usual baking ingredients, along with Hershey’s cocoa, heavy cream, confectioner’s sugar and sliced peaches. Jarred or canned peaches are a great option if you can’t get a hold of fresh ones.

13. Pot Roast with Vegetables
Every 80s kid grew up with pot roast and vegetables. This recipe is a classic, and it’s perfect for a dinner party.
You’ll need a 3- to 4-pound piece of beef (either heel of round or rump), along with onions, carrots and potatoes. Once the meat and veggies have cooked, you’ll prepare a homemade gravy that’s delicious.
You can serve this with rolls, pickles and other sides that were 80s favorites.
14. Pineapple Ring with Fruit
Ring mold desserts are so fun to make and fit perfectly into your 80s party theme. You’ll need a round bundt cake pan and a few ingredients to make this dish:
- Pineapple juice
- Sugar
- Salt
- Cream of RICE
Just combine the ingredients (minus the cream of rice) in a pot and bring to a boil. Sprinkle in the cream of rice and stir constantly until thickened. Pour into your cake pan and chill until firm (overnight is best).
Unmold and serve on a platter with fresh fruit.
15. Ham and Swiss Stuffed Chicken Breast
Stuffed chicken was a staple in your dinner rotation in the 80s, and there were so many creative ways to prepare it. But ham and Swiss cheese were classic choices.
Start with fresh chicken breast. Top each breast with a slice of ham and cheese. Roll it up and secure it with a toothpick.
Cook in a skillet until fork-tender, along with a can of cream of broccoli soup and milk.
Leave the toothpicks in, so guests can easily grab a bite and enjoy.
16. California Siesta Fiesta
Simple, delicious and creative. This dish uses another 80s pantry staple: Rice-A-Roni. Use the Spanish rice variety.
You’ll also need butter, water, stewed tomatoes, olives, tuna and a dash of hot sauce.
The whole dish comes together in just 15 minutes and makes 6 servings. Prepare a simple salad to serve with this, along with other classic 80s dishes.
17. Hot Pockets
Looking for simple food for 80s party ideas? Prepare a platter of Hot Pockets. They were iconic in the 80s and 90s, when processed foods were all the rage.
In fact, Hot Pockets were introduced in 1983.
You can buy frozen Hot Pockets from your local supermarket, or you can try your hand at making your own from scratch.

18. Retro Dorito Taco Salad
A fun taco salad that’s loaded with 80s flavors. This recipe combines ground beef with tomatoes, cheese, onion, iceberg lettuce, crushed Nacho Cheese Doritos and Kraft Catalina dressing.
Just brown the meat, drain off the grease and mix with the other ingredients (minus the chips). Refrigerate until you’re ready to serve, and then mix in the Doritos.
19. Mom’s 1980’s Cheeseball
The classic cheeseball is always a hit at parties, and it’s super simple to prepare with just a few ingredients.
First, get out your trusty hand mixer, and let your cream cheese sit out until it’s softened a bit.
Once it’s ready, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, honey and salt and pepper.
This recipe adds sriracha sauce, but I would skip this ingredient if you want to keep it authentic 80s.
Then, you’ll add green onions and pimentos to the cream cheese mix, along with cheddar cheese.
Spoon onto a large piece of plastic wrap and fold over the cheese. Use your hands to form a ball, and then refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Once chilled, remove the plastic wrap and roll the ball in chopped pecans. Refrigerate again for at least an hour before serving.
